Robert E. Hansen recently did a facinating interview with Bold Journey. Below is an excerpt from the interview.

Hi Robert, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I believe I was created to create. Not just art, but solutions. My purpose has always been to find creative ways to make a difference in someone’s life. Sometimes that happens through a portrait. Sometimes it’s through a story, a conversation, or simply showing up for someone with my time and energy. Generosity isn’t always measured in dollars. Sometimes the greatest gift you can give is your attention, your experience, or your willingness to help. If I have the ability to make someone’s journey a little better, then I feel a responsibility to do that. Art just happens to be the language I speak most fluently.

That’s why I don’t think of myself as someone who sells art. I think of myself as someone who creates experiences that help people see themselves, their loved ones, and their stories in a new way. I think that I always knew what my purpose is. Even as a child I knew that I was created for something outside of myself. I love people. They fascinate me.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

People often describe me as a portrait artist, but I see myself as a storyteller who happens to use art as my primary medium to bring stories to life.

My work is centered on one idea: everyone has a story worth preserving. Whether I’m creating a portrait, developing an augmented reality experience, designing wearable art, or speaking with someone about their family history, my goal is always the same and that is this, to create something meaningful that outlives the moment.

“What excites me the most is watching someone experience a piece for the first time. It’s rarely about the piece itself. It’s about the memories that surface, the conversations that begin, and the connections that are strengthened. That’s when I know the work has become more than art; it has become part of someone’s legacy“

Today, I’m expanding that vision by blending traditional portraiture with immersive technology to create what I call Legacy Experiences. Through augmented reality, a portrait can now speak, tell a story, preserve a family memory, or transport viewers into an experience that extends far beyond the frame. Far beyond my years. My goal isn’t to replace traditional art—there is no way that can happen. My goal is to deepen the emotional connection people have with it.

More than anything, I hope people leave my work feeling inspired to ask an important question: “What story am I leaving behind?” Because every portrait tells a story, and every story leaves a legacy. I have an exhibition coming up in September in Maryland at The Agency National Harbor. My work will be on display for 30 days. I am looking forward to connecting with collectors and sharing stories.
